Elliptical House

Located on the coast of Luz in Portugal, the Elliptical House was created as a sculptural expression of the geometric form of the ellipse.

The construction of the house, built by Mario Martins Architectural Office, a Portuguese team experienced in this housing typology, was completed in 2014.

It seems that the basic structure of the house is built on balance. The occupancy-vacancy rate in the building, the balance and harmony of the relationships between spaces come to the fore.

The transparency in the rooms both makes the view a part of the house and illuminates the entire volume.

The ellipse-shaped gallery above the veranda provides sky views and daylight from all angles.

Rising on an ellipse-shaped base, the form of the house offers an appearance that is both sculptural and harmonious with its natural environment. The fluidity of the chosen form allows the house to be oriented embracing the wind and the sea.

The basis of the design decision was the elliptical house's harmony with its neighbor to the east in terms of color and form.

The elliptical house offers its users an infinity experience with the help of form, color and lighting. Thanks to the pure white natural structure of the house, with no sharp transitions between its borders, you cannot feel where it begins and where it ends. The view of the pools giving the feeling of infinity merges with the horizon line of the sea. Thus, when you look from the bedroom upstairs, you feel like you are in the cabin of a boat.
