Adult Dress-Up with a Playful Twist

Chanel’s latest couture show for Spring 2024 at Paris’s Grand Palais was a sight to behold. Actress Margaret Qualley kicked off the event, welcoming attendees while a giant Chanel logo button descended from the ceiling in true Karl Lagerfeld style. The collection was a nod to the Poor Things impact, with a playful, dress-up-for-dress-up-sake theme running throughout.

The Victorian-era-inspired collection featured every model wearing white tights with black T-strap pumps, adding to the whimsical feel of the theme. Buttons were a core feature of the collection, appearing on sheer dresses, pockets, and colorful coats with rounded bottoms. The message was clear: there’s beauty in the details.

The iconic tweed blazer was reimagined with a lightweight frothy layer of tulle, with sequin camellias punctuating blazers. The wedding frock was a mini dress with big tulle sleeves and a flowing cape behind it, a welcome embrace of couture clothing injected with personality. The collection was a delicious exploration of texture, combining layers of tulle over tweed to create a sense of girlhood and womanhood intersecting in fashion.

The collection's playful and whimsical feel was evident in all aspects, from embellished bra tops and leotards to sequin jackets paired with big-pouch, floor-length tutus. The entire collection resembled a high fashion version of playing dress-up as an adult, providing a much-needed escape from the strange and worrisome times we live in.
