Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

  • 1 cup almond flour

  • 3 large egg whites, at room temperature

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • Food coloring (optional)

  • Buttercream, jam, or ganache for filling

Instructions:

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

  2. Sift together the powdered sugar and almond flour into a bowl and set aside.

  3. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites on medium speed until foamy. Gradually add the granulated sugar and increase the speed to high. Beat until stiff peaks form.

  4. Add food coloring, if desired.

  5. Gently fold the dry ingredients into the egg-white mixture until the batter is smooth and shiny.

  6. Transfer the batter to a piping bag with a round tip and pipe small rounds onto the prepared baking sheet.

  7. Tap the baking sheet firmly on the counter to release any air bubbles.

  8. Let the macarons rest at room temperature for 30 minutes to an hour, until a skin forms on the outside of the macarons.

  9. Preheat the oven to 300°F. Bake the macarons for 15-20 minutes, until they have risen and the tops are set.

  10. Let the macarons cool completely on the baking sheet.

  11. Once cooled, gently remove the macarons from the parchment paper.

  12. Pair up similar sized macarons for sandwiching.

  13. Fill the macarons with your choice of buttercream, jam, or ganache.

  14. Enjoy your homemade French macarons!

Note: French macarons can be quite finicky and may take a few tries to get the technique right. Don't get discouraged if your first batch doesn't turn out perfectly!
