Rahul Mishra Couture Spring 2024

A Collection with a Message

The 2024 Spring collection by fashion designer Rahul Mishra sought to raise awareness about the endangered state of insects. By delving into the fascinating realm of insects, including moths, fireflies, and dragonflies, Mishra aimed to highlight the threats facing these creatures through diminishing biodiversity. Despite human beings’ tendency to dislike insects, Mishra sees them as beautiful superheroes and named his collection accordingly.

Mishra referenced D.H. Lawrence’s poem "Snake," in which the narrator belatedly recognizes the creature as “a king in exile,” to convey how insects are often misunderstood.

The designer's show notes were inspired by the poem, and he carefully recreated the form of insects and reptiles in hand embroidery for the bedazzled garments. The collection featured a variety of colors and patterns, including an Indian window lattice pattern, that were often formfitting, majestic, and bold.

One of the most striking pieces was a giant embroidered firefly pinned onto a black dress which was worn by a model who appeared at the opening of the show. Another look featured encircled colorful moths, most of which were endangered species. The collection also included jeans that were spangled with colorful moths, worn with a shimmering black bandeau top, and pants and capes that were just as majestic as the gowns.

Mishra's message was clear: insects and reptiles are an integral part of our ecosystem, and their survival is crucial to our own. It's time to give these creatures the respect they deserve and protect them from extinction.
