With sequins, vibrant colors, leathers, patterns, feathers, and metallic looks, the dazzling style of the 1970s disco era is making a comeback today.

In this timeless age of fashion, where we frequently revisit and adapt past trends, the disco culture of the 1970s—a symbol of freedom and individuality—is set for a colorful, shiny, and eye-catching revival. Amid the prominent Old Money aesthetic, the understated elegance of quiet luxury, and the vibrant chaos of the Y2K trend, disco style stands out with its sequins, bright colors, leathers, patterns, feathers, and metallic looks, carving out its own identity and reminding us of its legacy.

A Style Born as Social Response

Disco emerged as a response to social issues, representing an escape from the era’s social and economic problems, unemployment, rising crime rates, homophobia, and racism. Providing a safe haven for minorities, the vibrant, futuristic, and bohemian style that began in the 60s became bolder in the 70s. It evolved into wide-leg pants, shiny fabrics, crop tops, mini dresses, sequins, crystals, metallics, jumpsuits, and body-hugging tights and dresses. This innovative and inclusive style blurred gender lines, creating colorful and liberated silhouettes with unisex hair and accessories.

Rising to break boundaries and chains, disco style transcended dance floors, making its way into runways, street fashion, and even work attire. Today's work jeans, mini dresses, winter furs, large hoop earrings, and platform shoes all trace their roots back to the disco era.

Disco on the Runway and in Celebrity Styles

The signature elements of disco style, frequently seen on both high fashion runways and fast fashion displays, made a notable comeback in 2022. Renowned high fashion brands like Paco Rabanne, Lorenzo Serafini, Dolce & Gabbana, and Versace officially announced its return on their runways, signaling its long-term presence.

The disco style, embraced by contemporary style icons like Harry Styles, Dua Lipa, and Suki Waterhouse in both their daily and stage outfits, has been quickly adopted by the innovative and limitless Gen Z. This new generation has integrated disco into their lives and wardrobes, creating a fresh fashion movement. Currently, disco makes an appearance in Beyoncé’s Renaissance universe, where she draws inspiration from Studio 54 and ballroom culture, infusing her album and performances with a massive disco vibe. This offers a safe space for her dancers and fans to be free and unique.

The disco craze, initiated by Beyoncé’s Renaissance, has already made its way onto the shelves of fast fashion brands, signaling the arrival of a new trend. Frequently seen at festivals, concerts, nightclubs, and beaches, metallics now appear in a variety of colors, patterns, and styles beyond the traditional silver, maintaining their inclusivity from the past. Gen Z’s creativity and boldness bring opportunities to experiment with colors and patterns.

Reflecting its full sparkle in high fashion brands, the disco frenzy appeared on Loewe's Spring/Summer 2024 runways with unconventional silhouettes, offering a fresh perspective on traditional menswear. The collection featured ultra-high-waisted glittery jeans, colorful leather jumpsuits, long coats, shiny polo shirts, chunky knits, patterned wool sweaters, and trench coat shirts. It showcased the groundbreaking spirit of disco with all its vibrant colors and dazzling charm.
